This holiday package is aimed at people with a passion for food who would like to find out more about Scottish cooking through a hands-on approach. The Scottish larder is filled with fresh and wild products which can be translated into beautiful dishes. There are two ways of enjoying a Scottish cooking holiday at our B&B, which all involve professional guidance by Bert Wigman who a few years ago upgraded his position from a keen amateur cook to a qualified chef.
Package 1
Our main cooking holiday package involves a 5 nights’ stay at our B&B with a group of 4 – 6 people who book together. Two or three members of the group can actively participate in the cooking part for 4 days, while the others will be enjoying the resulting dinner that will be served at around 6pm each day.

Package 2
If there are two or three of you and you are planning a shorter stay (min. 2 nights), we are equally happy to offer you a Scottish cooking experience at a cost of £65 per person per day on top of your B&B price. Please contact us to find out about our B&B prices which vary per season. The £65 per person per day includes professional cooking instruction between 3.30 – 6.00 pm, a 4-course dinner, all recipes plus a free surprise at the end of your stay.
If you would like to start your cooking experience on the day of arrival, you will need to be able to check in between 1.00 and 2.00 pm for a 3.30 pm start. Package to be arranged in advance.
Please note that we are not allowed to sell alcohol in our B&B, so if you like an alcoholic drink with your dinner, please bring along your own.
A typical cooking day
Before 3.30 pm
Whether you choose package 1 or 2, you will be starting your day with a traditional, vegetarian or continental breakfast, with freshly squeezed orange juice, freshly prepared fruit salad, eggs from our own hens, home-made bread, marmalade and jams and last but not least our own dry-cured and traditionally smoked bacon.
After breakfast you will have plenty of time to explore the (wider) area of Drumnadrochit and Loch Ness. We will be happy to advise you on where to go for your walking, cycling (we have two mountainbikes for hire) or car trips, directing you to waterfalls, castles, lochs, museums, ancient Caledonian pine woods, whatever takes your fancy.
For those interested in complementary therapies there is the option of receiving Bi-Aura therapy during the day by Mirjam, who is a qualified Bio-Energy Practitioner. Have a look at www.lochnessbi-aura.co.uk to find out more about this holistic energising and healing form of treatment.
After 3.30 pm
At 3.30 pm you are invited into our kitchen to start the cooking part of your holiday. You will find a menu for the evening's dinner and we will briefly talk you through the different courses. Ingredients for each of the individual dishes will all be lying ready and you can choose which dish you would like to help out with.
You will be given information about the typical Scottish ingredients, products and dishes in a relaxed and informal atmosphere, which so far has proved a most enjoyable experience for our guests. It will give you a hands-on opportunity to gain an insight in Scottish cooking, making use of Scotland’s exciting wild, local and fresh produce – although occasionally it will be mixed with a flavour of continental cooking because of our Dutch background.
Our food is prepared with quality Scottish produce and typical dishes/ingredients on the menu may be: Cullen Skink (fish soup), venison, game, lamb, own smoked west-coast salmon, shell fish, whisky, the legendary haggis and of course some of the well known mouth-watering desserts like Raspberry meringue and Cranachan.
Around 6.00 pm we will invite you to your table in our conservatory and will serve you the dishes, which will no longer hold any secrets for you . . . apart from the taste of course!
Learning new skills
Pasta making, bread making and sausage making are an option too and for those of you with a particular interest in curing and smoking Bert will be able to take you through the process in practice, as we started a smokehouse business from home in 2009 under the name of Loch Ness Smokehouse. Have a look at our website for a preview of the 9-day process of our dry-cured and traditionally smoked back bacon and note how we use whisky barrel wood shavings for the smoking part for extra flavour.
Back to nature
Depending on the season we pick raspberries, brambles or chantarelles in our area and use them for your dinner. We have eggs from our own hens and also grow our own herbs and some vegetables and for all recipes we use as many of our own fresh products as possible.
Finally
At the end of your holiday we will give you the recipes, so you can re-create your favourite Scottish dishes at home. If you live outside the UK, you may want to make sure that before you go home you buy some of the ingredients that you often can't get abroad, like black treacle, golden syrup, pinhead oatmeal, etc. Our local supermarket or otherwise the bigger supermarkets and health shops in Inverness will be able to provide you with all these goodies.
Not included in the cooking holiday packages:
Travel costs to and from our B&B
Travel insurance and cancellation cover
Lunches
Evening meal on day of arrival (package 1) and departure
Alcoholic drinks
Our B&B facilities:
We have two en-suite double rooms and one triple room (Kingsize double bed and a single bed) with private facilities which can also be used as a double or a twin room. Additionally we offer a comfortable guest lounge upstairs with a beautiful view towards Loch Ness and surrounding hills.
